Tax debt settlement scams
Tax Risk 6
Tax debt settlement scams

How it works
These scams target people who may owe taxes or worry they might. Fraudsters pose as "resolution" firms or even government-related services. They promise to reduce debt quickly if you pay upfront or share sensitive details.
Once they have engaged with you, they may start demanding escalating fees, request further personal details, or use fake forms to capture your signature and commit financial fraud.
Red flags to watch for
- Advisors demand fees to be paid before any real review
- You receive pressure tactics, threats, or "final notice" language
- They refuse to provide clear terms, credentials, or written scope
- You are requested to pay fees in unusual ways or to send funds to third parties
How to prevent an attack
- Verify the organization independently by researching licenses, reviews, and complaints through official channels
- Don't wire money to new recipients based on outreach
- Use your known professionals to coordinate any settlement amounts
